Unlocking Potential Providing Opportunities Achieving Goals

The National Primary Curriculum

Broad and Balanced

At Blackwell we offer a broad and balanced curriculum where every child is encouraged to build on good foundations and develop their individual talents and interests.

The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage children follow the National Foundation Stage Curriculum. There are six areas of development comprising Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication, Language and Literacy; Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development and Creative Development. The children have the opportunity to experience a variety of teaching styles that encourage them to develop key skills and to participate in activities that help them to experience and understand the world in which they live.

Key Stage One and Key Stage Two

The children study the National Key Stage One Curriculum. The curriculum includes the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technology plus a range of Foundation subjects including Art, History, Geography, Music, Design and Technology, Physical Education and Religious Education. Key Stage Two children are also involved in weekly French lessons.

Every day in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two the children take part in the required National Literacy and National Numeracy Strategy lessons. The majority of other subjects are taught through projects planned by the year group teaching teams. Some individual subject teaching takes place, particularly in music and sport. The Governors of the school have agreed that Sex and Relationships Education will be taught as an inclusive part of project work and questions will be handled sensitively as they arise. The curriculum is extended through the use of specialist teachers and educational visits.
